Hypnotherapy has become increasingly popular thanks to famous people like Paul McKenna. Sheila Hancock has used it for her nerves and fear of flying and many other famous performers have used hypnotherapy to cure nerves, phobias, etc. Many newspapers such as the Daily Mail often have articles in their health pages on phenomenal new work such as the HypnoGastricBand and magazines such as Closer have featured Future Life Progression and Past Life Regression.
I find the easiest way to describe it, is a state of deep relaxation where the hypnotist will imprint new patterns into your sub-conscious, based on discussion with you prior to the session and then based on your own goals and objectives.
If you think of your mind like a computer, you have the files in your folders. These would hold the information you need to access regularly using your conscious thinking brain. Then there are the files and folders that hold all the basic programming tools that allow your computer to actually run, the ones that we generally know very little about or how they work, perhaps other than to be aware of them.
There are many different techniques that can be used within a hypnotherapy session. Such techniques are; age regression; hypnoanalysis; parts therapy; past life regression; future life progression; regression to cause. The hypnotherapist will decide which method will be the most appropriate to use to help with your issue.
Hypnotherapy works very well with EFT (Emotional Freedom Therapy or Technique); CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy); counselling; Life Coaching & NLP.
So - what can it be used for? It's probably easier to say what it cannot be used for or the type of person that cannot be treated using it. For example we would never treat anyone with psychosis unless the hypnotherapist is a qualified psychiatrist as well.
In a nutshell, there are very few emotional; physical; habitual; negative issues that hypnotherapy cannot help with. Most issues, whether they be physical, emotional or psychological, cause stress and as the deep relaxation that comes via hypnosis invokes the relaxation response, which is the direct opposite to the stress response, then the client is going to benefit from that alone before any other work is done! So it's a little bit like a "BOGOF" supermarket offer, you get the relaxation response stimulated AS WELL as working on your particular issue - sounds like a great deal to me!
